Why I opened a sober bar in Gulfport, Florida

The idea for Sober Bar started with a simple question: why does going out have to come with alcohol?

I live in Gulfport, a town with real personality: art walks, night markets, live music, great food. But if you weren’t drinking, your options were basically coffee shops or soda at a regular bar. There was no place built around the ritual of a night out that happened to be alcohol-free.

So I built one.

We didn’t want a juice bar. We wanted a bar.

Sober Bar at 3062 Beach Blvd S is a coffee house by day and a cocktail bar by night. The espresso program is serious. The kitchen is New Orleans-inspired. The drinks are built like craft cocktails: glassware, garnish, bitters, botanicals, the whole thing.

We get a lot of people who arrive skeptical. They think “sober bar” means fluorescent lights and herbal tea. Then they see the room, taste a Call Me An Ube, and realize this is a real bar experience. The only thing missing is the hangover.

“The only thing missing is the hangover.”

Who comes here? Everyone.

Designated drivers. Pregnant guests. People in recovery. People doing Dry January or Sober October. People who just don’t feel like drinking tonight. First dates where both people actually want to talk. Remote workers who camp out with a cortado at 8am and come back for a nightcap at 9pm.

The common thread isn’t sobriety. It’s choice. People want the option to go out, be social, celebrate, and not have alcohol be the price of admission.

What surprised me most.

I thought the hardest part would be convincing people to try alcohol-free drinks. It wasn’t. The hardest part was convincing them a sober bar could still feel like a bar.

Once people sit down, that part takes care of itself. The real work is in the language, the design, the staff training, the menu architecture. Every detail has to say: this is a legitimate night out, not a consolation prize.

Why Gulfport?

Gulfport already had the vibe. It’s artsy, independent, a little weird in the best way. It just needed a place for people who wanted all of that without the booze. And with St. Pete Beach five minutes away and downtown St. Pete ten minutes away, we’re right in the middle of the action.

The future of going out.

I don’t think alcohol is going away. I think choice is arriving. The best bars and restaurants of the next decade will treat non-alcoholic drinks as equals, not afterthoughts. They’ll build menus, train bartenders, and design spaces around the idea that not drinking is a normal, respectable decision.

Sober Bar is my bet that Gulfport, and Tampa Bay, is ready for that.
